Abstract

A study was conducted in the pathology department of Bolan Medical Complex Hospital from 1st
January 2001 to 313t December 2001 for the- prevalence of HbsAg positive cases. Blood sample of
total 2101 patients, (both indoor and outdoor) were tested for Hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg)
during the above duration. Out of 2101 samples tested, 86 (4.1%) were found positive. Out of 86.70
(81.4%) were male and 16 (18.6%) were female. 69 (80.2%) were adult and 17 (19.8%) were
children. Average age was 28.5 years. This study confirms that our country falls in the category of
intermediate prevalence for Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection 3-5%)2. Our results 4.1% are
comparable with results of S.A Mujeeb3 found in Karachi.
