Abstract

Rubella is a major public health problem which is usually a mild rash
illness in children and adults. However, its seriousness and public health importance stems from the ability of Rubella
virus to cross the placental barrier and infect fetal tissue, which may result in congenital rubella syndrome. The
mechanism by which Rubella virus causes fetal damage is not well understood. Congenital rubella syndrome is an
under-recognized public health problem in Pakistan and can be reduced by vaccinating all seronegative women
